No Way Jose

No is tough to handle. We hated the word as kids and even more as adults. We want everyone to approve of us and help us get to the top. So what do we do when someone tells us no? How do we, as models, act in response? Here are three points on this type of situation. Cheers!

In this industry, we models, are told “NO” often. While the punch in the gut it is hard to handle, this blogs main focus is how to deal with negative feed back, rude comments, or people who misread your image/personality completely. As always, I will remind my readers that my point of view may not always be the only way to deal with situations. Please keep in mind my success is by sticking to these tips and tricks. It is in your best interest to follow them as well.

Post-Like-Comment

Today, social media is king. According to Pew Research Center the average person often looks at social media daily and 45% of those people visit several times a day. Many subjects shared on various sites and apps are often personal opinions on religion, politics, personal life crisis, and cats. Yes… cats. With that said you can only guess where I am going with this bullet point. As I say in almost every blog, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SHARE!!!!

Being passive aggressive about anything makes you look incredibly unprofessional. I get it. Sometimes its the easiest thing to do when you want to hear everyone is on your side. So when you receive negative feed back or comments about your modeling, I suggest not responding and feeding into it all. Simply delete the comment or forget about the situation. In the long run, no one cares. It’s best to brush it under a rug and move on. You look more mature and professional. Which is what gets you ahead in this business. Everyone has their own drama to focus on. They don’t want to read about yours.

Misconception

Sorry, no real way to put a cherry on top of this one. Being professional may make you seem like a ‘Bitch’, but in the long run you will work with other professionals. Not to mention have an amazing portfolio. I had mentioned in a few blogs that remaining professional while discussing collaborations with photographers is important. Flirting, using emojis, and improper grammar often red flag photographers that you are not a professional. Not to mention it makes other models lives more difficult because they were not an ‘easy’ response.

So how do you deal with photographers that are rude to you when you are just trying to keep it professional? KINDNESS. That’s right. Kill them with kindness. If you were to respond with hateful words. It would be easy for them to screen shot the conversation and let other photographers know you are not someone to work with. Try complimenting the photographer on their work and then stating the issue you are uncomfortable with. By killing them with kindness you come out the bigger person and you won’t be known as a ‘Bitch’.

Identity Theft

Many people outside of the industry will discourage you as a model. They will make you feel low and that what you are doing is inappropriate, no matter what the style of work. I find these people are often incredibly lost in life and not someone to encourage. Going back to my original bullet point, for just a second, I would like to remind you not to feed into their bullying by sharing a rebuttal via social media. These people are often unaware of the constant struggle in this industry. They judge a book by its cover and not the art. Everyone has their personal opinion on styles and techniques. You just need to know what works for you and grow.

My best advice in dealing with people who identify you as something you are not, is to keep going. Don’t let them be the reason you give up your goals. You become a stronger person by letting go of the negative and moving on. Proving to the ‘Haters’ you don’t need their advice to become the best of the best. They will take themselves down and you won’t have to get your hands dirty.

Modeling is a tough job. You need a hard shell. You put yourself out there for the world to see. Sometimes its not always glitter and rainbows. I hope this article helps you. I hope it encourages you to make the right decisions. I hope to be the person to lift you and boost your confidence. Cheers!
